Candidate Resources - DURING THE INTERVIEW - HINTS AND TIPS TO WIN ON THE DAY

During the Interview - The Basics
Do
-
Greet the interviewer with a firm handshake and smile, and make eye-contact!
-
Develop rapport and connect with the interviewers, but don't be over-familiar.
-
Aim for clarity and positivity in your answers. Be specific.
-
Focus on the client's needs, not your own.
-
Have a positive demeanour-you have been shortlisted and they're interested to
hear more about you.
-
Show keenness for the job. Be enthusiastic and show a high-level of interest in
the role and the client.
-
Be sensitive to the dynamics of the interview panel.
-
Pay very special attention to answering technical or strategic questions from
experts on the panel. Also focus on what might be simple or naive questions
from other members and answer these with the same assurance and focus.
-
Ask open questions which encourage discussion.
Avoid
-
Rambling off on a tangent.
-
Being negative or critical of previous clients you've worked for.
-
Coming across as "flat" in your interview. There's nothing inherently wrong
with being a laid-back person; but sleepwalkers rarely get hired.
-
Asking about flexible working arrangements or the client's expense policy is
best avoided.
-
Getting into a discussion over salary or benefits - leave the negotiating to
us!
Other Points
-
Most clients make decisions that are based on chemistry as much as technical
skills.
-
Ask the interviewer to outline the role, the nature of the work, the reporting
structures, the problems, complexities and issues associated with the role.
Having established these things, you are then equipped to map your skills &
experience onto their needs.
-
Employers look for people who love what they do; people who get excited by the
prospect of tearing into the nitty-gritty of the job.
-
Always give it your best effort. A lot of clients have multiple openings and
you may be considered for another area if you impress them.
And Finally
-
Show enthusiasm for the role and the company.
-
If you like the sound of the job, say so!
-
Try to impress upon the interviewer that you have enjoyed the meeting, thank
them for their time and shake hands.
