CAREER RESOURCES - BEFORE THE INTERVIEW - HINTS AND TIPS TO WIN THE JOB

The research and preparation that you do beforehand can determine how you perform and are perceived during the interview.

Before the Interview - Prepare and Research

  • Most organisations have a comprehensive website - take a look at this to familiarise yourself with their working culture and new developments.
  • Make sure you are as informed as possible of the role that you're being interviewed for. Find out the name of the project, what it's all about, and how this role works within it.
  • Linked-In can be a great source of information and may enable you to research which organisations and projects your interviewers have been involved with previously.
  • If you are an external candidate, you can approach the interview objectively and with a fresh perspective that internal candidates may not have. This is a good opportunity to make a positive impression on the interview panel.
  • Reflect on your experience. Think of three success stories that you can use to illustrate your skills and expertise - you can draw on these to answer many questions.
  • Think of questions that might be asked during the interview for example working on projects, implementing software or change management. Mentally prepare examples to support your previous experience in these areas.
  • Think of one or two sensible questions to ask at the end of the interview.

On the day ...

  • Dress your best - it's important to look smart for your interview!
  • Make sure youve planned your route there and whether youre travelling by car or by train, allow yourself some contingency time.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before the interview to allow yourself time to park and go through any security processes.
